Disposal of used Media plates and Culture Tubes

1.0         OBJECTIVE:

To lay down a standard procedure for Proper disposal of used media plates and culture tubes.

 2.0       SCOPE:

This Standard Operating Procedure is applicable to Media disposal in Microbiology Laboratory

of Quality Control Department.

3.0       RESPONSIBILITY:

              Microbiologist shall be responsible to follow the procedure mention in this SOP.

4.0       ACCOUNTABILITY:

Department Head & QA Head shall be accountable for effective implementation and compliance of this SOP.

6.0       PROCEDURE:

6.1           Microbial media plates

6.1.1        Wear rubber hand gloves and nose mask.

6.1.2        Autoclave the Media Plates and Culture tubes Discard at 15 psi, 121°C For 30 minutes/Validation Cycle.

6.1.3        Remove media content of Petri plates with the help of spatula and collect in a Disposable polyethene  In Stainless Steel Container.

6.1.4        After sterilization add 5% Dettol solution to the Media and dilute the autoclave content with tap water  and drain into the sink under running tap water/ ETP plant.

6.1.5        Keep the empty glass Petri plates for 1 hour in 5% Dettol Solution or Savlon solution and then wash

the Petri plates with water and dry them for reuse. Disposable plates should be discarded after keeping them for 1 hour in 5% Dettol or Savlon solution

6.2           Discarding of Culture tubes

6.2.1        Sterilize the microbial media tubes at 15 psi 121°C for 30 minutes/ Validatioin Cycle.

6.2.2       Drain the contents of tubes into the sink under the running tap/ ETP plant.

6.2.3       Wash the empty tubes thoroughly with disinfectant and dry them for reuse.
