6.2    Substitute toxic chemicals with less hazardous material whenever possible.

6.3    Perform all work at least six inches (15cm) inside fume hood.

6.4    Do not block airflow. Raise large objects 2 inches off the counter by placing them back side.

6.5    Never place your head inside the fume hood. No part of your body except hands and forearms should ever be inside fume hood. Leaning               into the hood to obtain better view places your face in closer proximity to the experiment and is dangerous.

6.6    Keep the fume hood sash closed as much as possible at all times to ensure the optimum face velocity and to minimize energy usage.

6.7    Keep lab doors closed to ensure negative room pressure to the corridor and proper airflow into the hood.

6.8    Do not store equipment in fume hood.

6.9    Train and educate personnel regarding specific hazards and include work methods that help reduce contamination exposure.

6.10  Have a general awareness of the operation of your fume hood and be aware of any differences in visual or audible cues that may imply                    change in function.
